Remote access- this is the only way to connect to your vps so if you should be camping in a valley watching a rare bluebird during a solar eclipse and you are without an internet connection, you might just have to keep watching that bluebird and save work for another time :)
Clean desktop- your desktop is no longer on your local machines. Anything you might want from those locations should be copied to your virtual server and whatever is left on the local desktops can be deleted. Remote work space = clutter desktop at home.
Remote storage- once you are moved over to the vps, you can set up a backup routine similar to how you would have done so locally. Use addon cloud storage if available, use ftp back up to a separate server, or whichever other option you prefer.
